Webinar 2023: What is informed consent?

Stewarts and NACCS are pleased to organise a webinar covering issues relating to
determining consent to medical treatment and how to deal with obtaining consent
where a patient’s capacity may be in question.

This will focus on the most recent changes in the law relating to informed consent combining this with guidance from the OPG/NHS/GMC and other national bodies as to how to properly deal with disclosing information and obtaining the patient’s consent to treatment.

This session will feature an introduction from Dr Craig Carroll (Honorary Treasurer NACCS and
Consultant Anaesthetist at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust) and will cover the
following:

  • Law on Consent Past, Present and Future
  • A summary of the move forward made by Montgomery v Lanarkshire Health Board
  • How should Consent be taken, common issues/errors and claims that have been brought
  • Examples of specific cases relating to Consent
  • Explanation of the tools available to clinicians where capacity is in doubt
  • Understanding about the pre-emptive steps that a patient can take to protect decision-making post incapacity and how a clinician should deal with these
  • Q & A will follow
