Dr Jonathan Rhodes

Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthesia, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Honorary Reader, University of Edinburgh

I was educated in Manchester and at the University of Edinburgh, where I trained in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. I am currently a Consultant in Critical Care and Anaesthesia at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh and Honorary Reader at the University of Edinburgh. During my training, I developed an interest in the pathophysiology of acute brain inflammation following trauma, which culminated in a neuroscience PhD.

My research focuses on traumatic brain injury (TBI), having been part of the team behind the Eurotherm 32-35 study. I maintain diverse interests in TBI research, including fever management and multimodality monitoring. My most recent multicentre study evaluated the significance and impact of venous thromboembolism in patients with isolated traumatic brain injury (TARDIS study, co-funded by NACCS and the BJA). I am the lead for the Neurological Critical Care section of the University of Edinburgh’s MSc in Critical Care and enjoy teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

I am the founder of CAMBOT, a decision support platform designed to provide real-time support to staff caring for the most complex patients in critical care and I am part of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Program.

Research Interests:

  • The role of inflammation in the neurobiology of secondary brain injury
  • Hypothermia and targeted temperature management in acute brain injury
  • Brain oxygen tension monitoring in severe traumatic brain injury
  • Decision support tools in complex neurocritical care
  • Deep venous thrombosis complicating traumatic brain injury
